Like a Bigfoot Podcast #77: Drake Kulick — Iowa Hawkeye Starting Fullback, Walk On to Game Winning TD

On this week’s show we are sharing the story of University of Iowa Hawkeye Fullback Drake Kulick.

In my opinion, Drake represents everything that I enjoy about Football: Hard work, embracing the journey and the speed bumps along the way, consistent improvement and the development of a leader.

His journey as a Hawkeye started as a walk-on and ended as a team leader a game winning touchdown.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

I really hope you enjoy this episode with Drake as much as I enjoyed recording it.  We wish him nothing but the absolute best as he steps out of the world of college football and into the intense process of getting on an NFL squad.  Good luck man!

If you guys enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out some of our previous guests on iTunes, Soundcloud, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Like a Bigfoot #76: Chad Spring — Barkley Fall Classic, Never Summer 100k, Ultra Spartan Races

This week’s episode is with athlete Chad Spring.  Chad has competed in a variety of races around the country over the last few years.  Recently he’s taken on Ultra Spartan Races and various ultra marathons including the Never Summer 100k in Colorado and the Barkley Fall Classic in Tennessee.

I met Chad on a run a year ago and last weekend he invited me to join him for part of his extra badass Saturday Spartan Race training which consisted of 19ish miles of powering up steep trails by his house and 2 miles of carrying an 80lb bucket of sand.

It was …..insane.

After joining him for part of the workout I sat down with Chad and chatted about all things Barkley Marathons (one of the most difficult races in the world) and 50k, preparation and balancing training with life, Ultra Spartan Races, and his experience competing in the Never Summer 100k (a race I’m tossing around as a potential 2018 goal race).

I hope you guys enjoy this episode! Definitely check out the Barkley Marathons documentary on Netflix, it really is my absolute favorite documentary in the last few years.  It’s called “Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young”.

Also be sure to check out the rest of our episodes on iTunes or Soundcloud.  I promise you’ll find some entertaining and inspiring conversations.

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #75: Hayden Hawks — Running 100 Miles Through Bears Ears National Monument

(Cover Photo by Derrick Lytle https://www.instagram.com/derricklytle/)

This week we welcome elite ultra runner, Hoka athlete, and all around nice guy Hayden Hawks to the Like a Bigfoot Podcast!

Hayden has a list of insane ultrarunning accomplishments.  Everything from winning Speedboat 50k to a first place finish 100k at CCC in Chamonix.  Most recently he accomplished something that completely captured my imagination- Hayden, his brother, and a friend explored 100 miles in Utah’s Bears Ears National Monument.

Bears Ears is an amazing National Monument in Southeastern Utah.  Its diverse beauty makes it truly a special place.  Recently, Bears Ears has been in the public eye due to President Obama designating it a National Monument in late 2016 and President Trump almost immediately reducing its size by 85%.

Hayden wanted to experience this area for himself.

Using his ultrarunning talents, he completely threw himself into the vast wilderness of the monument, running through deep untamed canyons, exploring beautiful ancient petroglyphs, and camping beneath the stars in complete solitude.

It’s an experience that helped him appreciate the ancient cultures that once inhabited the area and the modern Native American tribes that still call the area home.

I really hope this episode gives you a ground level perspective on the topic of Bears Ears National Monument.  What is it? Why is it important to so many people?  I also hope that Hayden will inspire you to step up to big challenges and explore the beautiful public lands that we are lucky enough to have put aside for us in this country.

Thanks so much for sharing your story Hayden! I really look forward to cheering you on this year as you step up to the big one this summer- UTMB!!!!
