Like a Bigfoot Podcast #201: Joyce Lee — “The Woman Who Won’t Stop Running”

Joyce Lee is on a run streak of epic proportions! Starting in January 2013 she has laced up her shoes EVERY SINGLE DAY to head out on a run. Despite bad weather, international travel, and the busyness of everyday life she has kept after it which is a phenomenal achievement!!

She was named one of Strava’s best runners by Red Bull distinguishing her as the “woman who can’t stop running”.

5ks all the way to ultramarathons, road races to beastly ironman triathlon, through her run streak Joyce has done it all and I’m super honored to be able to chat with someone who has taken on such a wide array of race formats.

In this episode we talk about why your favorite type of race should be “the next one your signed up for”, how she battled through hypothermia to finish an ironman, what keeps her enthusiastic, how she has kept the streak alive even in through travel and tough times, and the power found just by keeping at something.

I hope you guys enjoy the episode and are inspired by Joyce to give your own challenge a go!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #200: Dion Leonard — Stage Races, 200s, Leadman, Grand Slams with the Author of “Finding Gobi”

This week we are chatting with Dion Leonard, ultrarunner and author of the New York Times bestseller “Finding Gobi”.

Dion has received a lot of press for his book which  is ” the heartwarming story of Gobi, a stray dog he found on a race across the eponymous desert” which is something you need to check out, but he is also an incredibly accomplished athlete who has taken on some of the hardest challenges in the sport of ultra running.

He jumped all in on this sport by running a handful of Stage Races around the world including the Marathon Des Sables and the Gobi March.  In 2018 he finished second place in the Triple Crown of 200s, all three of Candice Burt’s remarkable two mile races. Then in 2019, after winning the Delirious 200 miler in Australia, he decided to up the ante by participating in the “Leadman” and the “Grand Slam of Ultrarunning in same summer. That means he raced every endurance event in Leadville (both running and mountain biking) plus four of the biggest 100 milers.

That has to go down as two of the craziest years an athlete has had in ultra running!

In this episode we get into all of those stories as we explore Dion’s growth both mentally and emotionally through pushing his limits. What drives him? What makes him persevere? How have his experiences shaped him into who he now is?

Excited to share this one and honored to get to talk with Dion! He is quite inspiring and after you listen to him you will feel like you can go out and take on the world!

BONUS: With this being the 200th episode of the show I felt like we needed to have an appearance from our very first podcast guest, my buddy Brady Manriquez. So we added a Bonus segment instead of an Outro where Brady and I just chat about the show and what it’s meant to me over the years.  We also briefly discuss what we are doing to challenge ourselves this weekend now that the Booneville Backroads Ultra was rescheduled for September.

Like a Bigfoot #199: Melissa Gosse 2 — Pivot…Don’t Pause, Self-Discovery Through Endurance

This week we are chatting 200s, stage races, pivoting on our goals and healthy endurance mindsets with Melissa Gosse.

Melissa is an amazing athlete who has competed in some brutal stage races along with completing the Tahoe 200.  In this episode we chat about how our 2020 plans have morphed into new, exciting adventures, how she handled major low points in stage races, and what she has discovered about herself by pushing her limits.

As endurance athletes I think we all can relate to the idea of adventure helping us grow emotionally, mentally and physically and I think the stories she tells and the conversations in this episode get at the essence of what endurance sports brings to our lives.

I really hope you enjoy this week’s show! I want to thank Melissa for being so awesome and open about her experiences!!

In 2018 Pete Kostelnick, fantastic ultra runner and the transcontinental record holder, laced up his shoes in Kenai, Alaska, packed up a jogging stroller with food and supplies and then took off down the road.  97 days later he pulled into Key West, Florida.  Through this quest he averaged 55 miles a day, exploring North America by foot.

This adventure was absolutely remarkable and I can’t wait to share some of Pete’s stories with you guys!

In this episode, we chat all about the Ke2Key along with his experience taking on the six day version of the Across the Years race- He won the race with a mind blowing distance of 444 miles.  That’s right FOUR HUNDRED AND FORTY FOUR miles!!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #197: Thad Burkamper 3 — FIRST MARATHON!!!

We are releasing a special bonus episode this week! A few weeks ago my buddy Thad Burkamper and I recorded an interview about his very first marathon for his podcast “Walk It Off- You’re Probably Fine”.  I really enjoyed the story and always love chatting with Thad so I thought I’d release it here too!

Thad is one of my friends who was supposed to meet me at the end of May for the Booneville Backroads Ultra.  As is the case with most everything right now, that race got rescheduled for next fall.  Over the last few weeks, Thad has kept busy working on house projects, building stuff for his kids, and various creative endeavors, but, with the race off the table for the time being, he really wanted to test his limits physically.

So on a random Saturday, he left his house and took off down the streets of Muscatine, Iowa.

Along the way he experienced all the ups and downs of a marathon.  He felt great, he felt terrible, he ran, he limped, he had his foot run over by his own Jurassic Park jeep…you know, the regular stuff that happens.

Hope you all enjoy!! Huge congrats to Thad as this is a huge accomplishment in any endurance journey!!
