Like a Bigfoot Podcast #74: Matt Marrero — Mojo’s Adventures on the Appalachian Trail

Week two of Appalachian Trail adventures on the Like a Bigfoot Podcast!!

This week we are joined by Matt Marrero, trail name “Mojo”, a southbound hiker who recently completed his journey on the Appalachian Trail.

Last year he finished college and almost immediately traveled up to Mt. Katahdin in Maine and started walking.  Over 5 and a half months, he experienced all the joy, freedom, pain, understanding, struggle and accomplishment that the trail brings.  A real life-changing experience!

Matt loves chatting about his time on the AT and I really enjoyed hearing his tales about his many adventures on the trail.  In this episode we chat about what really inspired him to take on this quest, the biggest meal of his whole entire life, the beauty of trail angels, awesome trail nicknames, how he handled the challenging moments, what the trail taught him about himself and what he plans on doing in the future.

Also what inspired him and some friends to take on a brutal 28 mile day???  SPOILER ALERT: It rhymes with “Spinese Chuffet”

Combine this with last week’s episode with the “Blackalachian” Daniel White and you will really get a good idea of what trail life is like (although I have to imagine you really have to be there to fully “get it”).

Hope you guys enjoy the last episode of 2017!!! It’s been an amazing year! Thanks again for everyone who’s tuned in and extra thanks for all of our amazing guests!!!!!!! EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #73: “The Blackalachian” Daniel White — Stepping Onto His Own Path and Hiking the AT

Huge thank you to “The Blackalachian” Daniel White for joining me on the show this week!

A year ago Daniel was keeping his life busy, grinding away at a job he wasn’t passionate about.  Doing the same thing day after day, until a cousin suggested he do something completely insane.  Hike the Appalachian Trail.  Walk through the mountains all the way from Georgia to Maine.  Daniel was in.

I’m so inspired by his story because he went from a complete newbie and took the hardest step- just starting.  Growing up, hiking and camping wasn’t the norm in his community.  Before his hike he had never slept out in the woods or climbed a mountain.  But he wanted to challenge his own status quo.

There are so many aspects of his story that define bravery: saying you are going to finish something and letting absolutely nothing stop you, being flexible and learning on the fly, accepting adversity and maintaining joy, and setting off the normal path of life to forge your own way!

In this episode Daniel shares his story.  What was the first week like?  What lessons did he learn and how did he change over the course of the trip?  When was the first moment he truly felt like a thru-hiker?  What messages does he have for people who are stuck in life or uncomfortable doing something outside the norm?

Huge thanks again to Daniel for taking some time to chat with me! I was inspired to chat with him after reading this wonderful Trek.co article “First Gold-Mout Rapper to Thru-hike the Appalachian Trial”

https://thetrek.co/appalachian-trail/blackalachian-first-gold-mouth-rapper-thru-hike-appalachian-trail/

Also make sure you check out his EXCELLENT Youtube channel “The Blackalachian”.  He recorded almost every day on the trail and his videos will give you a great idea of what it takes to complete a thru-hike of the AT.

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #72: Calvin Johannsen 3 — How to Successfully Accomplish Goals this New Year

I’m a self-admitted gigantic Calvin Johannsen fan and am so happy to call him one of my best friends.  I am even happier to have him back on the show for an unprecedented THIRD episode!

In fact, our friendship is one of the main reasons I started this podcast.  I’m incredibly lucky to have such an inspiring person in my life and when I started the show Calvin was in the midst of his 14ers Project (100 mountains in 100 days)  I really wanted to share his story and, selfishly, I also wanted to record some of our conversations.  The joke has always been that Calvin should be a motivational speaker named “Calspirations” and I wanted an excuse to store and revisit some of our chats!

He’s become one of the most successful people using intention, clear vision, and willingness to put in the consistent work.  He’s very analytical and driven to push himself towards constant momentum on any goals!

In this episode we go through Calvin’s goal setting process, how he reflects on previous goals, and how he builds intention into his daily routine.  The intention was to prepare everyone in the Like a Bigfoot community for a fresh start as we reflect on 2017 and prepare for 2018!

I really hope after listening you apply some lessons he shares while chasing success in your own life.

This is TRULY ONE OF THE BEST EPISODES OF THE SHOW.  Enjoy!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #71: Ryan Esdohr 2 — Inside the Lab, Mindset, Ballet, Jiu Jitsu

On this week’s Like a Bigfoot Podcast we catch up with “Superhuman Lab” owner, Like a Bigfoot podcast Yoda, and all around awesome guy Ryan Esdohr.

The thing I absolutely admire about Ryan is his curiosity.  Through his work with movement, mobility and recovery in Superhuman Lab, his podcast “Inside the Lab” and his quest for self improvement, Ryan has explored an incredible amount of athletics, meditation and optimization.

In this episode we chat about everything from successful communication to what to expect from your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class to why he signed up for ballet lessons as a grown man.

Ryan is awesome and I love being able to learn from him.  Hope you are able to turn some of his ideas into motivation for achieving your own success!

Also, be sure to check out his wonderful podcast “Inside the Lab” where he and his business partner Matt explore all areas of movement, mobility and recovery as it applies to athletics.

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #70: Jimmy Funkhouser — Starting Feral Mountain Co, “Year Without Fear”

How would you live your life if you had absolutely no fear holding you back?

This week’s Like a Bigfoot Podcast is a sit down conversation with the owner of Feral Mountain Co. Jimmy Funkhouser.  Feral is my absolute favorite outdoor shop in Denver and Jimmy’s story is incredibly energizing.

On New Year’s Eve 2016, Jimmy committed to living a “Year Without Fear”.   He promptly quit his corporate job of 10 years and within three months Feral was up and running.

Feral is a unique store.  It’s very community driven with everything supporting Jimmy’s mission of connecting people to wild places.  Outdoor adventures have had such a positive impact on his life, his passion is to “create adventure” all through his community.

So Feral has become much more than a shop.  There are outdoor movie nights, organized group hikes, 14er climbs, and even a couple hammocks to relax in out front.  He’s forged a very inviting community encouraging everyone to get outside and explore.

In this episode Jimmy shares the challenges faced during a major stepping outside your comfort zone, how his very first hiking trip has influenced the rest of his life, why conservation and wild places mean so much for him and how we can help our public lands, and how he aligned his personal purpose and passions with the mission of Feral Mountain Co.

If you’re in the Denver area or just driving through on your way up to the mountains I highly suggest the two minute detour off I-70 to load up on adventure supplies and gear from Feral. They rent all sorts of camping equipment for those of you flying to Denver who want to explore but couldn’t ship out all your camping gear.  Chat with Jimmy or the other folks working there for recommendations for all the insanely beautiful places Colorado has to offer.

Also the store has, hands down, the most badass logo I’ve seen!

Thanks Jimmy for taking time from the busyness of running a store to chat with me for the show. What you have created is fearless, inspiring and I hope our listeners take away as much motivation from you as I did!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #69: Eszter Horanyi — Ouray 100, Bikepacking, Life of Adventure

Happy Thanksgiving guys!! As promised we have an awesome episode of the podcast for you this week.

Eszter Horanyi is an adventure athlete who spends her time exploring the public lands of the west.  You can find her mountain biking, running, scrambling, camping and hanging in her scamp trailer with her boyfriend and previous Like a Bigfoot podcast guest Scott Morris.

She has embraced the explorer lifestyle and through her experiences wants to inspire others to fall in love with the wild lands of the U.S.

In this episode we discuss a little race called the Ouray 100 in which Eszter finished 2nd in only her third trail race EVER…which blows my mind!  We also discuss all things mountain biking as her life journey morphed her from a collegiate road cyclist to a badass mountain biker.  We’re sure to hit on bikepacking and all the extremely challenging endurance bike races she’s taken on.

I hope you guys enjoy this episode! The plan is that Eszter will inspire you to kick butt during your post Thanksgiving workouts (which, if anything like mine, are going to be slow and painful due to the belly full of stuffing).

I hope you are inspired by her strength, mindset and the spirit of exploration she embodies!

For all of her adventures, be sure to check out her blog and her instagram as she is an excellent writer and takes some pretty damn good pictures.  She’s about to take off to New Zealand for a few months and are planning on some epic adventures!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #68: Kuntal Joisher — Discovering Your Life’s Mission, Quest to Summit Everest

In 2016, Kuntal Joisher was the first documented vegan to stand on the top of the world.  Mount Everest was a culmination of a journey built around the discovery of his life’s mission and bravery to step outside the norm to pursue something spectacular.

Having never been an athlete and weighing upwards of 240 pounds, Kuntal defied his sedentary lifestyle, fell in love with the Himalayas and started to go after one of the most insanely difficult adventures; the summit of Everest.

His story is energizing, exhilarating, and will move you to “find your Everest”- a worthwhile cause that drives your life in meaning and purpose.

In this episode Kuntal shares the importance of discovering your life’s purpose and how it leads to growth and success, his Everest journey and how he persevered through three separate trips wrought with hardships and tragedy, the emotions that come with finally accomplishing your life’s goal and many other lessons he has learned along the way.

He’s an amazing story teller and I could honestly listen to his adventures all day long.  He’s passionate about veganism, mountaineering, spreading love and positivity and influencing those around him to discover their own passions.

I absolutely loved chatting with Kuntal and hope you guys enjoy this really excellent addition to the Like a Bigfoot Podcast.  Be sure to check out the links below for all things Kuntal Joisher so you can dig deeper into his veganism, excellent photography and his mission as a dementia awareness advocate.

Huge thanks to previous guest, Dr. Kasey Johnson of the Unlock Wellness Podcast for connecting me to Kuntal.  I can’t even express how much I enjoyed having him on the show!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #67: Justin Horneker — Running Coach for Anthrophysique, Successful Training

Very excited this week to share with you this episode of the Like a Bigfoot Podcast with Anthrophysique running coach Justin Horneker.

Over the last month the theme of the show has been exploring the ideas of “expanding our capacity for success” and “transforming inspiration into action.”

This conversation with Justin is really intentional around these two ideas.  I feel like there are a few huge barriers to success:

#1. No accountability

#2.  No Vision or Roadmap

#3. No knowledgeable person to bounce ideas off of

For those of us pursuing running, a great option for minimizing these obstacles is hiring a coach.  Someone like Justin who’s job is to take part in discussions, help set goals, hold you accountable, and really push you to achieve beyond your perceptions.

That’s why I’m pumped to share this convo!

Justin is extremely knowledgeable about all things running and is able to discuss at length the physical demands, the mental challenges and the emotional needs of his athletes.  He is also an active participant in the running world as a previous collegiate athlete and road runner.

In this episode, Justin talks about his experience running cross country in college, his training philosophies based around “Less B.S. and more hard work”, how to handle injuries and complacency, and how to set and achieve goals in the running world.

Thanks so much for listening, I truly appreciate all the support we receive week in and week out!

The Like a Bigfoot Tribe is consistently growing and pushing towards being more successful, awesome people and really spreading goodness around the world and it is completely blowing my mind!! So from the bottom of my heart I want to thank you guys.

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #66: Natalie Larson — Self Supported California Coastal Trail Fastest Known Time

In August Natalie Larson caught an Uber to the Mexican border and set out on the biggest adventure of her life.  44 days 18 hours 40 minutes and 1,171 miles later, she had traversed the entirety of the Californian coast.  Along the way she survived encounters with mountain lions, swam across rivers, and discovered the kindness of strangers.

Natalie’s journey really encapsulates all I respect and love about adventure.

Here’s a bit of the intro to her fantastic blog about the experience (link below):

I saw headlamps from afar that led me to water in the middle of the night. I found a woman’s purse complete with driver’s license, credit cards, sunglasses, from the 70s. I found my way out of a sandstorm on fifty-foot high dunes, scared away a mountain lion by screaming at the top of my lungs, climbed over slippery rocks, raced along the beach to beat the incoming tide, escaped the grasp of a farm worker who grabbed my arm, swam across a river carrying my gear on my head (twice), followed footprints when I couldn’t see through the beach mist at night, tripped, fell, and passed out from the pain along the highway. I dealt with poison oak, an infected blister, and glasses scratched by sandy high-speed winds. I slept under trees beside the road, on the beach, and in campgrounds where I shared food with the homeless. By San Francisco I had started to resemble a homeless person and the homeless recognized me as one of their own, asking me for gear tips and warning me that the police were “on the war path.”

Her story truly is AWESOME

I hope you guys enjoy the episode and feed off of the inspiration from Natalie to move forward on your own dreams!

Congratulations again Natalie.  You are an inspiration!  Keep being you and kick some ass on whatever your next big thing is!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #65: Dr. Kasey Johnson — Host of the Unlock Wellness Podcast, Taking Action on Goals

Welcome back! This week we are chatting with the awesome host of the “Unlock Wellness Podcast” Dr. Kasey Johnson.

A month ago I was honored to be a guest on her show (episode 53) and afterwards I really wanted to chat again to learn more about her and all of the excellent projects she is pursuing.  Kasey totally embodies the idea of “spreading goodness” as has spent the last year fearlessly taking action on her goals.

In this episode we discuss Kasey’s background, why she created the Unlock Wellness Podcast, how and why she has been so successful setting and accomplishing goals, what she has learned since going plant-based and training for her first triathlon.

Definitely check out all of the awesomeness Kasey is putting out to the world (links below).  Hopefully, you will really follow her example and simply TAKE ACTION on your own goals!
