Like a Bigfoot Podcast #201: Joyce Lee — “The Woman Who Won’t Stop Running”

Joyce Lee is on a run streak of epic proportions! Starting in January 2013 she has laced up her shoes EVERY SINGLE DAY to head out on a run. Despite bad weather, international travel, and the busyness of everyday life she has kept after it which is a phenomenal achievement!!

She was named one of Strava’s best runners by Red Bull distinguishing her as the “woman who can’t stop running”.

5ks all the way to ultramarathons, road races to beastly ironman triathlon, through her run streak Joyce has done it all and I’m super honored to be able to chat with someone who has taken on such a wide array of race formats.

In this episode we talk about why your favorite type of race should be “the next one your signed up for”, how she battled through hypothermia to finish an ironman, what keeps her enthusiastic, how she has kept the streak alive even in through travel and tough times, and the power found just by keeping at something.

I hope you guys enjoy the episode and are inspired by Joyce to give your own challenge a go!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #200: Dion Leonard — Stage Races, 200s, Leadman, Grand Slams with the Author of “Finding Gobi”

This week we are chatting with Dion Leonard, ultrarunner and author of the New York Times bestseller “Finding Gobi”.

Dion has received a lot of press for his book which  is ” the heartwarming story of Gobi, a stray dog he found on a race across the eponymous desert” which is something you need to check out, but he is also an incredibly accomplished athlete who has taken on some of the hardest challenges in the sport of ultra running.

He jumped all in on this sport by running a handful of Stage Races around the world including the Marathon Des Sables and the Gobi March.  In 2018 he finished second place in the Triple Crown of 200s, all three of Candice Burt’s remarkable two mile races. Then in 2019, after winning the Delirious 200 miler in Australia, he decided to up the ante by participating in the “Leadman” and the “Grand Slam of Ultrarunning in same summer. That means he raced every endurance event in Leadville (both running and mountain biking) plus four of the biggest 100 milers.

That has to go down as two of the craziest years an athlete has had in ultra running!

In this episode we get into all of those stories as we explore Dion’s growth both mentally and emotionally through pushing his limits. What drives him? What makes him persevere? How have his experiences shaped him into who he now is?

Excited to share this one and honored to get to talk with Dion! He is quite inspiring and after you listen to him you will feel like you can go out and take on the world!

BONUS: With this being the 200th episode of the show I felt like we needed to have an appearance from our very first podcast guest, my buddy Brady Manriquez. So we added a Bonus segment instead of an Outro where Brady and I just chat about the show and what it’s meant to me over the years.  We also briefly discuss what we are doing to challenge ourselves this weekend now that the Booneville Backroads Ultra was rescheduled for September.

Like a Bigfoot #199: Melissa Gosse 2 — Pivot…Don’t Pause, Self-Discovery Through Endurance

This week we are chatting 200s, stage races, pivoting on our goals and healthy endurance mindsets with Melissa Gosse.

Melissa is an amazing athlete who has competed in some brutal stage races along with completing the Tahoe 200.  In this episode we chat about how our 2020 plans have morphed into new, exciting adventures, how she handled major low points in stage races, and what she has discovered about herself by pushing her limits.

As endurance athletes I think we all can relate to the idea of adventure helping us grow emotionally, mentally and physically and I think the stories she tells and the conversations in this episode get at the essence of what endurance sports brings to our lives.

I really hope you enjoy this week’s show! I want to thank Melissa for being so awesome and open about her experiences!!

In 2018 Pete Kostelnick, fantastic ultra runner and the transcontinental record holder, laced up his shoes in Kenai, Alaska, packed up a jogging stroller with food and supplies and then took off down the road.  97 days later he pulled into Key West, Florida.  Through this quest he averaged 55 miles a day, exploring North America by foot.

This adventure was absolutely remarkable and I can’t wait to share some of Pete’s stories with you guys!

In this episode, we chat all about the Ke2Key along with his experience taking on the six day version of the Across the Years race- He won the race with a mind blowing distance of 444 miles.  That’s right FOUR HUNDRED AND FORTY FOUR miles!!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #197: Thad Burkamper 3 — FIRST MARATHON!!!

We are releasing a special bonus episode this week! A few weeks ago my buddy Thad Burkamper and I recorded an interview about his very first marathon for his podcast “Walk It Off- You’re Probably Fine”.  I really enjoyed the story and always love chatting with Thad so I thought I’d release it here too!

Thad is one of my friends who was supposed to meet me at the end of May for the Booneville Backroads Ultra.  As is the case with most everything right now, that race got rescheduled for next fall.  Over the last few weeks, Thad has kept busy working on house projects, building stuff for his kids, and various creative endeavors, but, with the race off the table for the time being, he really wanted to test his limits physically.

So on a random Saturday, he left his house and took off down the streets of Muscatine, Iowa.

Along the way he experienced all the ups and downs of a marathon.  He felt great, he felt terrible, he ran, he limped, he had his foot run over by his own Jurassic Park jeep…you know, the regular stuff that happens.

Hope you all enjoy!! Huge congrats to Thad as this is a huge accomplishment in any endurance journey!!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #195: Cody Townsend — Adventures in Ski Mountaineering THE FIFTY

This week we are welcoming professional skier and ski-mountaineer Cody Townsend to the show!!

Cody is in the middle of taking on one of the most difficult challenges in ski mountaineering, climbing up and then skiing down the “Fifty Classic Ski Descents in North America”.  It’s a project that requires skill, patience, guts, and effort beyond comprehension.  It has also become one heckuva YouTube Adventure series that you should stop and binge watch immediately!

The quick version: after reading his copy of the iconic book “Fifty Classic Ski Descents in North America” Cody thought “I’d ski those” then he thought “I guess I might as well climb up them too.”  Then he set out to do just that and he’s filming each attempt along the way.  And the films are freaking awesome, terrifying, hilarious, educational and inspiring all in one.  Each episode is legitimately high quality adventure filmmaking which you guys will enjoy immensely!

From THE FIFTY website:

“From Alaska to Colorado, California to Baffin Island, these lines are among the most difficult in the world and all of them have at least one historical descent. But no one has skied them all. Over the course of the next three years, I will change that.

Drawn in simply by the allure of “I want to ski that,” I plan to devote the next few years of my life to skiing every line documented in that book. And for one final twist, I plan on doing it the hard way, by climbing every line that I ski.”

—Cody Townsend, November 2018

This episode explores- What it was like skiing the Line of the Year in 2014 (which is something that has to be seen to believe!), Cody’s three rules his lives by through the FIFTY, how he has transitioned as an athlete to add ski-mountaineering to his repertoire, my 6 year old’s reactions to his video of Pyramid Peak, how he handles fear, and his decision to postpone this season’s adventures due to COVID-19.

Hope you all enjoy the episode!! Cody is an incredible athlete but also a super down to earth easy to talk to kind of dude and I am really grateful he shared an hour with us!!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #194: Gavan Hennigan — Rowing Solo Across the Atlantic, Winning the Iditarod Trail Invitational

This week we are chatting with Irish Adventurer Gavan Hennigan all about his life as an adventurer! Get ready because this is an absolutely AMAZING episode of the show!!

Gavan has spent his adult life diving head first into adventure.  Having traveled around the world for work as a deep sea saturation diver (which is fascinating), he has taken on everything from climbing Himalayan peaks to running across a frozen Siberian lake in the winter to rowing across the Atlantic Ocean by himself to, most recently, winning the Iditarod Trail Invitational!

In this episode we get to hear all sorts of adventure tales from these expeditions and dive fully into how Gavan’s mindset has evolved because of them.  This is a person who has had some very unique life experiences and I am so very grateful to be able to listen to his stories and lessons and be able to share them with you guys!

Hope you enjoy the show as much as I did!! Thank you so much Gavan and best of luck on everything that you plan to take on in the future!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #193: Clark Beckham 2 — Tales From His First 50 Mile Ultramarathon

A couple months ago Clark Beckham laced up his shoes to run 50 miles at the Rocky Racoon in Huntsville, Texas.  Since we previously talked after the Marine Corps Marathon, Clark’s training had been a bumpy road- think busy life of a musician on tour combined with a rough marathon recovery.

Despite a near non-existent training block, he lined up at the start line anyway.  Braving the ups and downs of his very first ultramarathon, pushing through every step of the way and discovering just how much he is capable of through pure grit and determination.

This is the story of Clark’s race.  A story in which he will inspire you, make you laugh, make you wince in empathetic pain, and challenge you to go after your own ridiculously lofty goals!!

Hope you guys enjoy the show! I am absolutely floored by Clark’s story and am incredibly inspired by him!

Like a Bigfoot Podcast #192: Ryan & Emily Wanless 2 — Enduring the 350 Mile Iditarod Trail Invitational

A month ago we chatted with Ryan and Emily Wanless as Ryan was days away from entering the Alaskan Wilderness to take on the EPIC 350 mile Iditarod Trail Invitational.

Since that time, Ryan has slept near wolves, trudged through ridiculously deep snow, heard tales of Moose attacks, pulled a sled up through a mountain range, marched down a frozen river, and finished his incredible adventure at backwoods cabin in McGrath, Alaska.

This episode captures some of the adventures he had along with the lessons he learned along the way.  I love chatting with Ryan and Emily about the extreme ultras they take on and have learned a lot about the sport through our conversations.

Hope you guys enjoy the episode and are finding new and exciting ways to spend your days as we are all battling through this difficult time.  Much love!
